Colossians 3:13 - Forgiving One Another
Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
This verse tells us that when there is a conflict or a gap in our interactions with others, we should forbear and forgive others. The Bible recorded such a thing: “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus said to him, I say not to you, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21-22). From the exchange between Jesus Christ and Peter, we can feel God’s will. He hopes that we can learn to forgive others, love one another, and get along well with others. If someone offends us, we think it is enough to forgive him seven times. But Jesus Christ asked us to forgive others seventy times seven. This is the principle of getting along with others given by God. He hopes that we can forgive others and take it as our responsibility, as a mandatory lesson for loving and satisfying God. This is what should be possessed by normal humanity.
After we were corrupted by Satan, we are full of corrupt satanic disposition, arrogant and conceited, assert supremacy over all, selfish and despicable. When getting along with others, we refuse to be inferior to or under anyone but speak or act for our face and interests. When others’ words or actions hurt our face or harm our interests, we will be estranged from others or even hate them. As a result, there is no way for us to get along with one another in a normal fashion. If we practice according to God’s demands, treat everything with a God-loving heart without considering our own personal benefit, our loss or gain, then we can forgive others. In other words, those who can forgive others have a kind heart and are kind-hearted people. God likes such people. Then how should we practice and enter this aspect of the truth?
I’d like to share a passage of fellowship, “True kindness means that we can correctly treat others even though they sin against or offend us. We should forbear our brothers and sisters, forgive them seventy times seven, and forgive them for eternity. Even if they should have some transgressions or have done something which really hurt and upset us, we should pray to God, not treat them like enemies, much less intend to harm them. If we are able to do this, then we are kind-hearted. They offend us that way, but we don’t hate them and still pray for them because they are our brothers and sisters. This is truly kind-hearted people.”
